The Annual Holywell Pilgrimage for St. Winefride
Every year, God willing, there is an Orthodox pilgrimage to the well and shrine of St. Winefride (Winifred) in Holywell, North Wales. St. Winefride was a 7th century western Orthodox saint. Miraculously, this shrine has survived the ravages of centuries, including the iconoclasm of the Reformation.
The ancient Saxon chapel stands alongside the shrine and it is here that we celebrate the Divine Liturgy before walking down to the well for sprinkling (and sometimes diving in – there is a swimming pool attached!) The relic of St Winefride is graciously loaned to us for the day by the Roman Catholic Church.
This pilgrimage is organised annually by the Orthodox Community of St. Barbara in Chester.
